How to Remove Credit Card from Your iTunes Account

Apple makes it as easy as possible to buy music, movies, and apps from the iTunes store. For this purpose, Apple asks you to provide credentials for a valid form of payment, usually a credit card, when you sign up for an iTunes account. The information is kept on file, so it's always on hand for quick purchases. If you don't want to store credit card information in iTunes because you're concerned about privacy, or if you don't want your child to make unauthorized purchases while using your computer, remove the card from the iTunes store.

  1. Open iTunes.
  2. If you are not yet logged in, go to the Store menu, choose Sign in, then log in to your account.
  3. After signing in, go to the Store menu item, then select View my Apple ID. You may be prompted to enter your password.
  4. In Apple ID Summary, click the Edit link (located on the right is Payment type).
  5. In the Edit Payment Information screen, select None instead of selecting the credit card.
  6. Scroll down and select Done.
  7. Your Apple iTunes account no longer has a credit card attached.

How to Get Apps on an Account Without a Credit Card

After the credit card is removed from your iTunes account, you can still get apps, music, movies, and books on your iPad. There are a number of options, including one that allows children to download what they want without having to do anything special.

  • Give apps as gifts: Instead of buying apps on iPad, use a different account with a credit card added to buy apps. Or gift music and movies through iTunes store.
  • Set up an iTunes allowance: This option is great if you want a low-maintenance solution. Use the allowance to keep a close eye on what your child is doing on iPad. Setting up an allowance can also be great for older children.
  • Add and remove: This requires the most maintenance, but is a viable solution. When you want to buy something, add the credit card to the account and remove it after the purchase is confirmed. This works best if you're planning purchases for iPad once a week or once a month.
  • Install it first: If you have young kids who don't need the latest and greatest apps on their iPad, this is the easiest way. Once you've signed up for an account, download all the apps, books, music, and movies you want before you remove the credit card.
